Pleasure gardens are traditionally places for the public to enjoy nature and cultural events. Monumental sculpture, water features, festive lighting and stalls have been part of pleasure gardens from Roman times to the English pleasure gardens of the 18th and 19th centuries. We have gathered together a team of emerging leaders in the fields of sculpture, horticulture, water feature design and engineering to develop a series of interventions that will bring coherence and a sense of dignified celebration to Woolwich.
Each intervention will be carefully tuned to its immediate urban context. They will also be scaled to have a clear spatial and experiential connection between them, unifying this collection of public spaces and suggesting a variety of pleasurable experiences within a single visit to the town centre. Together they will form a pleasure garden for the 21st century.
