The Brighton Aquarium, the first purpose-built aquarium in the world, is one of the few structures that stand on the south of the main east-west coastal road through Brighton. The roof of the building was once used by Victorians ‘taking air’ amongst bandstands, skating rinks and cafés with uninterrupted views of the sea. The roof terraces were unsympathetically redeveloped in the 1990’s and have been blighted since with few tenants taking up leases.
David Kohn Architects was appointed by Brighton Seafront Regeneration Ltd in 2009 to prepare designs for the modification of the existing rooftop retail units into a new restaurant and hotel. Planning permission and Listed Building Consent for the restaurant were gained in early 2010.
