Wallpaper* magazine invited David Kohn to design a workstation for the contemporary open plan office. Collaborating with Italian furniture maker, Porro, a prototype is being exhibited at the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition at Palazzo Brioni, Via del Gesu 2A from 14th-19th April 2011.
The workstation is named 'Jerome' after the fifteenth century painting of St Jerome in his study by Antonello da Messina, in which the saint sits inside a small timber study which itself sits within a large cathedral space. The workstation is intended to carve out a smaller, more domestic scaled room within a larger office. The frame is made of olive ash which has a strong ripple figure, with a linoleum writing top, two side drawers and an overhead glass shelf. A cable run at the back of the station allows multiple units to be placed back-to-back and side-by-side, aided by small wheels on the back legs, while the optional overhead shelf can create a varied office landscape as shown in the model made by Flatcut_.
Porro is one of Italy's finest contemporary furniture makers. Founded in 1925 and still in family hands, Porro has been art directed by Piero Lissoni since 1989, resulting in classic pieces of highly crafted furniture from a broad portfolio of accomplished designers, including Bruno Munari, Werner Aisslinger and Front.
