Thomas Dane's main gallery is on the first floor of 11 Duke Street, St James's. DKA designed a second space on the same street to provide a more informal setting for shows. We found the interior heavily lined with layers from previous refurbishments so a key design approach was to strip away as much as possible to reveal the original structure of the building. This resulted in much improved room proportions and a raw, materially rich gallery interior that is unusual for the area. As a counterpoint, a shop vitrine was installed at the entrance and the floor finished in oak herringbone parquet. The basement was also refurbished to create offices, viewing rooms and a workshop.
