We were shortlisted in a competition to design a new building for Collingham Gardens Nursery in Camden, London.
We proposed the site be centred around children’s play by the new building embracing its beautiful garden setting. A pergola greets you as you arrive, takes you past a space for your bike to the entrance of the school before leading off into the woodland play area. Once the nursery day has begun, the pergola becomes a covered play space.The generous foyer connects all of the key spaces in the building which enjoy uninterrupted views of the garden beyond.Within each of the play rooms are smaller spaces carefully scaled to children’s play including a high level crawl space inside a child-sized pergola-like timber roof structure. Beyond the foyer is a winter garden that acts as a multi-purpose space for growing kitchen vegetables, staff breaks and parents’ meetings. This ensures that the building is enjoyably used to the full, all day long.
